If you want extra help with your Original Medicare copays, deductibles, or even emergency care costs outside the United States, then you can purchase a Medicare Supplement plan. Medicare Supplement plans help pay for the out-of-pocket costs left after Medicare Part A and Part B have provided coverage. There are different types of Medicare Supplement plans, and they range from Plan A to Plan N, but keep in mind that they have varying levels of coverage.
Medigap Plan A
Plan A provides the basic benefits found in every Medigap plan. It helps with common costs like hospital and medical coinsurance, but it doesn’t cover Medicare deductibles and several other expenses.
Medigap Plan B
Plan B includes the basic coverage found in Plan A but adds coverage for the Medicare Part A deductible. This gives you extra protection from out-of-pocket costs if you need inpatient hospital care.
Medigap Plan C
Plan C provides broad coverage, including both the Medicare Part A and Part B deductibles. However, this plan is only available if you were eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020.
Medigap Plan D
Plan D covers many of the costs left by Original Medicare, including the Part A deductible, skilled nursing facility coinsurance, and limited foreign travel emergencies. You are still responsible for the Part B deductible and any Part B excess charges.
Medigap Plan F
Plan F offers the broadest coverage of the standard Medigap plans, including both Medicare deductibles and Part B excess charges. The catch is that you must have been eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020 to buy it.
High-Deductible Medigap Plan F
High-Deductible Plan F offers the same broad benefits as regular Plan F, but you must meet a high yearly deductible before the policy begins paying. You may pay less each month for the plan, but you take on more of your medical costs first.
High-Deductible Medigap Plan G
High-Deductible Plan G gives you the same basic benefits as regular Plan G after you meet a high yearly deductible. It may offer a lower monthly premium, but you must be prepared to pay more of your medical costs before the plan begins paying.
Medigap Plan K
Plan K takes a different approach by paying 50% of several Medicare costs while you pay the other 50%. It also includes a yearly out-of-pocket limit that helps protect you if your covered medical costs become high.
Medigap Plan L
Plan L works much like Plan K but pays 75% of several covered Medicare costs instead of 50%. You pay the remaining share until you reach the plan’s yearly out-of-pocket limit.
Medigap Plan M
Plan M covers many of the costs left by Original Medicare but splits the Medicare Part A deductible with you. The plan pays 50% of the Part A deductible, and you are responsible for the other half.
Medigap Plan N
Plan N provides broad coverage while leaving some costs for you to pay when you receive care. You may have copayments for certain office and emergency room visits, and you’re responsible for the Part B deductible and any Part B excess charges.
